Timeline of Switzerland's History
History Of Switzerland
Switzerland has a very long and rich history that dates back to 15 B.C. In this time it started with the Romans. The Romans under the rule of Emperor Augustus invaded the eastern part of Switzerland and took over its territory. The Romans ruled for a very long time until the fall of their empire leaving Roman settlers in the eastern lands of Switzerland. By 800 another powerful group of people came into control over most of the land between the Jura Mountains and the Swiss Alps. These groups of people were known as Helvetians. The Helvetians ruled much of the lands for many years however, there presence came and went just like the Romans. By 1273 the Habsburg Dynasty was up and coming within the European world. This caused major conflict with Switzerland, as many Habsburg's tried to gain control over the country. This was a point in history that defined Switzerland and its patriotic power to keep its land their own.
Looking forward into Switzerland's history in 1914 during World War One; this was a moment that set the tone for the countries outlook on diplomatic matters. At this time Switzerland declared its self to be neutral during World War One. This status has carried through into the second world war where again Switzerland remained neutral in the matters. This moment has defined Switzerland as a country and is one of its widely known attributes it carries. Additionally, another important point in Switzerland's rich history was when females gained the right to vote. In 1971 women were officially allowed to vote and take part in the politics in the country. This with a point in time which the country was furthering its efforts in making Switzerland gender equal.
On a diplomatic view in history of the country, Switzerland has two important events within its time. In 2002 Switzerland became part of the United Nations (UN).
