Demographic Data
Gapminder
Figure One: These charts show the overall increase in life expectancy in Switzerland's population (1825 and 2015).
In 1825 the overall life expectancy of the population in Switzerland was about three times smaller than what it is in 2015. This shows that over the years the overall quality of life has gone up. The population since 1825 has been able to live longer and more full lives. This increase in life expectancy could be due to a variety of factors. For example, the quality of health care and modern medicine has advanced thus people are no longer dying of the flu and can fight off diseases easier. Due to this there would be a decrease in death rates allowing life expectancy to grow. Another factor that could contribute to the overall increase in life expectancy over the years could stem from better care for the elderly such as nursing homes. Better care of elders results in a longer quality of life. Overall looking at figure one it is clear that from 1825 to 2015 the life expectancy rate has almost tripped in size. (Figure One)
Figure Two: These charts show the overall decrease in babies being born per women in Switzerland's population (1825 and 2015).
In 1825 Switzerland's total amount of babies being born has decreased since 2015. The amount of babies being born in 1825 could be due to the fact that having large families in that time was common due to the labor their children could do for the family. Many families during this time lived on farms in Switzerland as the country has a lot of agricultural opportunity. However, as industries have evolved there was no longer a need for the birth of so many children in families. Looking at figure two it is clear that the rate of babies being born has reduced in size by four times of what it was in 1825. Another factor that contributed to this decrease was the introduction of family planning and contraceptives. As women became introduced to birth control there were less unplanned pregnancies which decreased the number of babies being born. Overall there is a clear decrease in babies being born from 1825 and 2015.
Religion In Switzerland
The three main religions that are present within Switzerland are Roman Catholics, Protestants and Muslim (Religion in Switzerland, 2014). Roman Catholic and Protestant fall under the domain of Christianity, although they do not have the same beliefs they have the same origin and similar core values. Christianity originated about 2000 years ago in Palestine. It was founded off of Jesus Christ's life and teachings that he brought within the Bible. Muslim originated around the same time of Christianity. There teachings and beliefs are based off of Muhammad and his message from an angel.
Religion within Switzerland has a positive influence on its social development. These main religions have different Gods and ways in which they pray/worship; however the preachings are based around core values that are shared among them. These values are factors such as justice, tolerance, respect and compassion (Influence of Religion in Switzerland). These values that are within religion are the bases on which society and civilizations live and thrive off of. Religion holds a strong bond in correlation to the countries social development. This means due to the presence of religion within the country it promotes an even more positive and cohesive environment to live/ interact in. This is evident within the country as Switzerland has a very low crime rate (Swiss Crime, 2015). This is reflected by the justice and respect within the people of the country and the reinforcing values that they hold in their own religions.
Switzerland has scared places that pertain to the three main religions. For Christianity, there are various Churches and historic Cathedrals that are located all over the country. In most towns and major cities there is a church that the public is able to access. For Muslim there are less sacred places compared to Christianity (Sacred Sites in Switzerland, 2016). However, the country has places such as Mosques in which they are able to worship and pray. Mosques are not as abundant as Churches and there is some searching involved locating these places of worship.
Much like the United States, Switzerland takes on the principle of separation of state and church. Religion does not play a a part in the political agenda of the government, nor does it have an impact on the way that the country is run (Church and State). Switzerland however is overall very accepting and tolerant to the various practicing religions that are present in the country. Switzerland is a neutral country and prides its self on the diverse number of cultures that it contains.
Overall, religion within Switzerland is very present and is another factor that contributes to the rich culture of the country. Its diverse number of religions reflects the positive and open environment of the country, which embodies it's neutral state. It is nice to see that the country does have places in which many of the religions can go to for sacred places to worship and be in their own space. Looking at Switzerland through a religious leans has provided me with more insight into how diverse this country is.

Religion in Food
Food in Switzerland is highly linked to religion within the country. Many dishes derive from cultural and religious customs that are still practiced today. A dish called fondue, is a popular item in Switzerland that is widely eaten. This dish is essentially hot cheese boiled in a pot in which one is able to dip bread and other items such as pickles and peppers into it. This dish is commonly associated with the religious holiday of Christmas, practiced by Catholics in Switzerland.
Production of Food
Most food in Switzerland is grown in the country. As stated before in a previous section of this website; Switzerland is a very agricultural oriented country. There is a lot of land that is prime for cultivation. Additionally, the country has a vast population of cows, in which produces a majority of the dairy that is sold locally.
Diffusion of Food
Fondue is a dish that has been heavily diffused throughout many countries. The English especially have taken on the Swiss native cultural food as a regular dish of their own. Many enjoy fondue during the winter, and is sold up and down the cafe slopes. Additionally, the American have adapted fondue as their own. Instead of cheese, chocolate and other foods have been substituted in.
